🌈VIVIDS🌈

Thinking about adding some vibrant colors to your hair? Here’s (a lot) of info I like my clients to know first!

1.Every vivid color you see is some level of blonde/light underneath, no matter how dark or light the color is. For true and extreme vibrancy of tone, like what you see below, the hair has to be the (close) to color of the inside of a banana. For more sublte/muted tones, a more subtle blonde/light canvas is needed. So unless you’re already light enough for the vivid colors desired, pre-lightening hair is always required. Check out the picture below to see how light my client’s canvas is underneath all those colors!

2. Because of this👆🏻, not all vivid colors are achievable on everyone - personal hair color history, health, and/or texture can pump the brakes on the process. Meaning - if your hair can’t handle being lifted as light as it needs to be for the color palette desired without compromising it, I won’t do it. But I WILL give you other color options that could work with what is existing, and guide you on how to get it healthy again, with dedication, patience, and time…and we can re-visit your goal when we get there. Healthy hair is always top priority🙌🏻

3. Also because of #1, these appointments are LONG. My full head sessions *typically* run 7 - 8 hours, color blocks/panels *typically* 4 - 6. This will vary person to person.

- I work at a rate of $110 hourly for vivids that is all inclusive, so alllll those hours include everything - all lightening, treatments, color, vivids, cut, and styling done. Total cost is determined by how long the service takes start to finish.

4. I don’t scalp bleach. Totally not knocking it, just not my thing! I like my vivids depthful/rooty/lived in, both for aesthetic and longevity. A rooted grow out is way more forgiving and low maintenance then the hard line grow out of a scalp bleaching.

5. I typically don’t do or personally recommend doing pastel tones or silver/grey. For these tones, the canvas has to be lifted to as close to white as possible. While there are some people who can get that light with minimal stress on the hair (finer, naturally lighter, virgin hair, etc), a lot can’t without the hair being over compromised. Besides that - because pastels and grays are such a light tonal deposit - they wash out QUICK. You’re lucky if you get more then 3 washes before it’s completely gone! I recommend sticking with deeper more vibrant tones for better longevity. As deeper tones fade out, they will live in a sort of “pastel” realm anyway!

6. UPKEEP - Vivids fade with washing. Time frame is different for everyone depending on the hair it’s on, frequency of washing, amount of heat styling you do, exposure to sun/swimming, and shampoo/conditioner/products you use (stick with what I recommend and you’re good😉.)

- With each wash, it will fade, usually a half or full shade lighter. Hot water accelerates this - washing with ICE FUCKING RATTLE YOUR BRAIN COLD WATER HELPS! Co-washing (washing with conditioner only, no shampoo) or using detergent free washes also help preserve color. But honestly, the best way to preserve them is just wash your hair as little as possible. I recommend weekly, if you can push 2 go for it.

- As they wash out, they fade up to lighter, sometimes brighter, and eventually more faded “pastel” versions of the original color. Sometimes they wash out completely and you’re left with blonde again, sometimes they just hang out there in faded land FOREVERRRRR and never want to leave. Different head to head. Once that point is reached, where we go from there is up to you…

- The same color palette can easily be refreshed again. If changing the color palette and previous faded colors are still remaining, they either need to be removed (if we safely can) or we need to work with the remaining colors to dictate which other colors we can overlay on top of them that play well together.

- Because I choose to keep my lightening for vivids rooted, how often you do your “big appointment” is up to you. A rooted grow out never really looks like it HAS to be done, it’s more personal preference. Meaning - you can just choose to refresh your vivids when they fade without having to do the blonding every time. Or, you can just let your vivids fade back to blonde and leave it be!

Most of my clients who do blocks/panels of vivids typically do their blonding appointments 1-2 times a year, and they refresh vivids in-between as the prefer. Full heads, depending on preference and how rooted their blonde is, typically do their blonding 2 - 5 times a year and refresh vivids each time. Hair can be colored many different ways to honor the type of maintainability you prefer.

While every stylist’s process is different - this is how I personally work with vivid color. It’s really important to me that my client and I are aligned and on the same page for any service, but especially for vivids. Clear communication, realistic expectations, patience + trusting the process are always key for me.

I always require an in-person consultation prior to booking any vivids appointment so I can see/feel your hair in person while we talk hair history, health, goals, and expectations - but these are all things I find helpful to consider even before the consult. I love my clients knowing what they’re getting into before we go there!

Consults are always complimentary. To set one up:
